Faith comes
through hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ.” Romans 10:17
The Bible Society of Maine is working to
equip the Church so that men, women and children may come to faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, and follow Him as Lord.
Since
1809 the Bible Society of Maine has distributed Scriptures and encouraged Bible reading throughout the state and beyond. As
a service to the people and churches of Maine, we provide Scriptures at cost in many English versions and world languages,
and in a variety of formats, so that each person may read and hear God’s Word in his or her “heart” language.
Our
Grants Program provides the Scriptures below cost, or even free of charge, in response to needs and opportunities. Among the
groups with whom we work are Habitat for Humanity, Literacy Volunteers of America, Prison Fellowship Ministries, Seafarer’s
Friend, institutional chaplains, school and public libraries, college and youth outreach, and local churches.
We are
also involved in programs to encourage regular Bible reading and which lift up the place of the Bible in society and culture.
For example, we freely distribute Bible reading guides, sponsor Bible readings on five Maine radio stations, promote National
Bible Week observances, and support student Bible Clubs in schools.
Finally, we are in the forefront of efforts to combat
biblical illiteracy. We provide Bible information and education to people and churches, sponsor workshops
to increase people’s understanding of the Bible and its effective use, and help connect people and resources.
The Bible Society of Maine is a 501(3)c non-profit corporation. Our Board of Directors represents a cross-section
of denominations and theological viewpoints, and includes clergy, lay and religious persons. Our work in funded entirely
by the donations of members and friends, past and present.
