MARYLAND BIBLE SOCIETY (MBS) founded: April 1810 in Baltimore, Maryland
“MBS is committed to connecting Biblical principles to life. We will accomplish this through
partnerships with local churches, ministries and individuals who share a passion for God’s Word by utilizing programs,
services, and grant distributions. Above all, MBS seeks to demonstrate the need for, and the power of, God’s Word to
change lives.”
Bible societies formed in the wake of the great missionary movement of the late 18th century.
They formed all over the Western world, distributing Bibles throughout not only in their own countries, but into the
world beyond. Translations became as critical as distribution within the bible society movement.
Funds were raised so that every person could own a Bible in their own language. These translations
continue today.
MBS has
reached out to the entire State of Maryland and also, in affiliation with the American Bible Society, participated in funding
the construction Bible Houses in Mexico City, Mexico, Cristobal, Panama Canal Zone, Beijing China as well a funding the printing
of Bibles in Nanjing, China. MBS supported the translation of the Bible into Urdu and Dr. John Goucher
traveled to the Middle East to provide these Bibles to Arabs leaders. Within Maryland, in just the past 12 months, the Society
has increased it contacts with local churches by 400 %. Our mission is to help all churches in Maryland by walking beside
them, providing new and different programs & seminars as well as Bibles - the tools they need to reach Christians and
Non-Christians - promoting the living out of the Word of God. Those who understand that the Bible is unique in its power to
change lives, to give them purpose and to provide peace and joy are in the decline. It is time for a renewed
commitment and MBS is making it.
